Once your amaryllis has finished blooming, you can transfer it to soil to continue growing.
1. Remove from the Ball
Dump remaning water and tap on the side of the ball. It should pop open easily. Take the bulb out and remove any loose or damaged roots.
2. Plant in Soil
Place the bulb in a pot with well-draining soil, leaving the top third of the bulb above the soil.
3. Water Lightly
Water enough to keep the soil slightly moist (not wet).
4. Place in Light
Keep in a bright spot indoors or outdoors (depending on season).
5. Let It Grow
Allow the leaves to continue growing—this helps the bulb store energy for future blooms.
While your amaryllis grows and blooms beautifully in water, it uses up the energy stored inside the bulb to do so.
After blooming, the bulb needs to rebuild its energy—and it can only do that in soil. Soil provides the nutrients and stability the bulb needs to recover, grow new roots, and prepare for future blooms.
Water alone can support the bloom cycle, but it doesn’t provide enough nutrients for long-term growth.
